A design does not usually involve the
creation of anything other than a technical or functional
picture of an end result based upon the requirements
as described in the
Plan stage. A design
can be as simple as an image or diagram, but usually it
is a carefully created textual outline defining the main
business operating components, products, processes, inter-operating
characteristics, technical specifications with block diagrams
showing inputs and outputs. It can also include a full or
partially working prototype for more visual interaction.
A design defines how something will
function in relation to connecting components and the
audience (customer) who will use it and how it will operate
in a presumed environment - individually and together
with other things. Although the look and feel of the
end result may be an ultimately important element of
a product or business, this is usually secondary to the
core design.
To summarize, the purpose of a design
is to communicate an interpretation of a plan or business
requirement in terms that identify IF the
idea is at all possible and if so, HOW it
can be done along with the
RESOURCES required to get it done and the
TIME needed to deliver the desired end result.
The design must gain acceptance from the business owners
(or stake holders) prior to the building of anything significant.
Design is a necessary step, prior to creation.
